Abstract: Thermal stability of a high-C-Mo and low-Si hot work die steel oil-quenched at 1060 ℃ during tempering at 580, 620 and 660 ℃ for 2-30 h was investigated. The microstructure and hardness variation characteristics of the tested steel after tempering at different temperatures for different time were analyzed, and the tempering softening model of the tested steel was established in combination with the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami equation. The results show that the hardness values of the tested steel tempered at 580, 620, and 660 ℃ for 30 h are decreased by 16.4, 26.4, and 33.6 HRC respectively compared to the as-quenched specimens. The activation energy for tempering of the tested steel is 110.3 kJ/mol. The Avrami indices tempered at 580, 620, and 660 ℃ are 0.275, 0.304, and 0.190, respectively. All these indices are below 0.5, indicating that the martensite decomposition process of the tested steel is mainly controlled by volume diffusion. Moreover, the Avrami index is lower at higher temperatures, suggesting that the tested steel has stronger thermal stability at higher temperatures.
